Hunter, you have said you don't need to cover the space due to the 
comforter hanging down.  But another idea.  I have seen a 
couple where they removed the front panel of the drawer, discarded 
the rest of the drawer wood and hinged the front to the floor.  Then 
use boxes under the sofa.  In your case, you'd need to cut the front 
in two so that you could pull down just the section that is not 
blocked by the desk.  

But, having seen your work, I know you can handle this project with 
no problem.  The hardest part will be moving all your stuff just to 
be able to remove the drawer in the first place ;-)
