I see no problem with this.  We rebuilt our sofa completely - ripped out the 
cushions and replaced it with a wooden frame sitting on the original metal 
frame.  We have foam cushions.  We lost the drawer slides when we did this and 
now our drawer simply sits on the floor.  We put big handles on it and pull it 
out when we need it, but it is not attached to the framework whatsoever.
