 Not to defend Volkswagen, but there was an earlier post on this 
subject and it contained a news video. If you watch this video you 
will notice that the hitch he was using wasn't much more than what 
most people use to pull a utility trailer or boat with. He did not 
have it hooked up using a weight distribution hitch. If this is the 
type of hitch he intended to tow with, it would not have towed good 
with suburban or full size truck, let alone a short wheelbase 
Volkswagen. It sure would not have been safe. I wonder what the 
weight capacity of that ball was. I couldn't tell for sure what kind 
of setup Volkswagen used, but I don't think it was much better. Check
