You may want to look into placing 2 way valves and a bypass  on your 
hot water heater so you don't have to fill that with the pink stuff..
Then just drain the hot water heater when Before you close the bypass.  
  You don't have to blow out your pipes. just pump the
pink stuff into them replacing the clear water.  That works well in 
Iowa that gets cold.
