Again, not the best that could happen but not irreparable.  First thing 
is to determine if the garage is on a circuit from the house or on a sub 
panel.  If the wiring in the panel/sub panel is correct (black on 
breaker, white on neutral bar) then there is a splice reversed somewhere 
(look at all switches and lights that's where it's easiest to mix up 
colours) or (worst case) all the receptacles are reversed.  FWIW all 
garage receptacles are supposed to be ground fault protected for just 
this reason, they are readily accessible for use outside where life 
safety is an issue.
