[A/S] Thermostat probe

Question for refrigerator afficianados >>

I'm one day away from installing a new thermostat in my MA52 Dometic gas
refrigerator. 

The old probe (3' long tiny hollow tube with a spring shaped end on the tip)
is routed up the wall (from the floor) behind the pipes in back of the
refrigerator - just before it goes into a hole on the back wall of the
refrigerator -- where it will sense whether or not the interior temperature
of the refrigerator is going to freeze my lettuce or just chill it.

Although I've finally figured out how to position my arm so it can just
barely reach up inside the back wall ('67 22' Safari) to the hole for the
probe, I'm 100% certain I can NOT route/maneuver the probe tube behind the
pipes (as is now the case), ----  but there is plenty of space between the
pipes and the outside wall.

Question:  Will routing the probe tube up the spacious area between the
pipes and the wall result in the thermostat getting faulty data and not
functioning properly?

To my way of thinking, it shouldn't matter one whit - but I've never done
this job before. My new thermostat cost me $100.  I'd like to do the job
right the first time.
