I just replaced my load range C Marathon tires with load range D Marathons.  
The old Marathons did not have a circle S after Marathon.  The new Marathons 
have a circle S after the word Marathon on the outside sidewall.  One fellow 
Airstreamer told me that there was a "silent" recall on the non-circle S 
Marathons.  My Goodyear dealer was unaware of any such recall.  My fellow 
Airstreamer also said the Circle S indicated a redesigned tire that has the 
weak point in the sidewall.  In case of a tire failure, it is designed to 
blow out the sidewall and not out the tread.  This, if true, should help with 
damage caused by blowouts.

Anyone able to confirm this postulate?
