I agree with Jim that you should use the vintage and other sites for 
basic info. I got our 1983 Excella 31 from Walts RV in Ocala in June 
of 2001.

It was bigger than I was looking for.  But it turned out to be easier 
to find one this size.

Generally speaking older Airstreams are much lighter than newer ones. 
The newer units have heavy oak cabinets, which are beautiful but add 
weight.  Mine has a dry weight of 4,950 lbs and wet (with full tanks 
and groceries and clothing) of 7,300 lbs.  Generally focus on the 
gross maximum weight as you will always carry a lot of stuff and will 
be no where near the dry weight.

By the late 80's a 31 ft Excella had weight numbers (both dry and 
wet) of 1,000 lbs. heavier than mine.  

As to any years that are bad:  the answer is none. Condition is more 
important than the years. Having said that:  During the 70's 
Airstream was owned by Beatrice Foods.  One of the mistakes they made 
to cope with the energy crisis was to lighten the frame .  It had 
only an impact on the long (over 26 ft or so) rear bath models.  Some 
of those ended up with sagging rear ends, which require the 
installation of "elephant ears" to reinforce the frame and stop the 
sag.  For that reason the resale value of long rear bath models can 
be potentially a problem, as some buyers like myself would not 
consider one.  Mine has a rear bedroom and the bathroom in the middle.

I believe in either 1972 or 1973 Airstream added a gray water tank to 
their units  Prior to that time the grey water exited directly out of 
the trailer through the same outside hose as the black water.   It is 
a lot better to have a grey water tank.

The people at Airstream were extremely helpful over the phone with 
information Customer service is (937) 596-6111.  Personally, since I 
live in Florida, also found Walter Barksdale in Ocala (352) 237-6813 
very helpful.  He is a restorer of Airstreams.
