You need a brake controller to make the brakes on the trailer even work.
Most-recommended are 2 units:

The Jordan 2020 and the Tekonsha Prodigy. The latter is available from
Camping World, I have one and love it.

"It says here in the book" that if your vehicle is "prewired", there should
be a place to easily connect the brake controller.
