Cindy,

On my unit, the filter feeds a small "bar type" faucet that is 
independant of the main faucet. It filters either the tank or city 
water and is only used for drinking, cooking and coffee. There is a 
cut off under the sink so that it can be cut off for filter change 
and winterizing, but the main faucet can still be used. I'm not sure 
about the check valve.
