[A/S] UPS - was 'Electrical Problems'
Hunter - just a thought re: 'surge protectors'... i've been using an
'uninterruptable power supply' (UPS) which contains its own battery as well
as some fairly sophisticated surge-protection... so in the event of a ground
fault or power spike, it not only disconnects all the components connected
to it from the outside power, it switches to battery power. More accurately,
it's operating off the battery all the time, and continuously charging
itself. When there's a problem with the outside power, it just cuts it off.
Depending on how many things are being powered, you have a few minutes or
more to save computer work and power down normally until the problem is
located and remedied. Expensive (~ $400), but well worth it, imho. Also,
laptop batteries last a LOT longer when ac is supplied through an UPS.
