When i was renovating my mother's cable/satellite cabling in southern
california last year, i found that the previous installer had used a kind of
satellite/cable combiner/splitter so that the incoming cable tv and
satellite cables could be combined outside; so that only one cable needed to
come through the wall, into the house. Then, inside the house, another one
of these things is used to split the signal into cable/antenna and satellite
signal. It is a 'passive' device, a lot like the traditional cable splitters
of old, but must filter the satellite signal and cable/antenna signal
differently.

They also use an advanced type specialty splitter/combiner for broadband
cable/cable tv lines.

These special satellite/cable splitter/combiners are available at
RadioSchlock and Circuit City, etc... they seem to work quite well, with no
perceptible degradation of either signal.
