I had shades in all my windows.  Have so far switched two for vinyl blinds.  
The kitchen window and the livingroom behind the couch.  I don't have either 
attached at the bottom, the kitchen blinds are held by the curtains and I run 
the livingroom one up when I travel.

I didn't need them cut, amazingly Home Depot had the right sizes. I did have 
to shorten both of them considerably though.  I  will be getting all wood 1" 
blinds eventually.
