If you already have a battery we will assume it is 12V.  You could use them
one battery at a time quite successfully but if they are indeed 12V and you
hook them in series you will have 24 volts and ruin much of the installed
equipment.  When you wish to use two 12V batteries they should be connected
in parallel.

You have to clearly understand the difference between series and parallel
before you get into battery life questions.
