I installed a "whole house" surge protector on my 2000.  Got it from Home 
Depot for around $30.  Hooked it where the power cable tied into the unit 
power BEFORE the breaker panel.  Needed a SMALL 5yr old to squeeze into the 
rear trunk, but was able to do it using long arms.  

NOTE:  Just make sure that the POWER IS OFF/DISCONNECTED AT SOURCE

Sorry for yelling folks, just cannot stress the above enough.  Been bite too 
many times.
