not sure where you got your instructions but ... Bud Cooper did a couple of good
instructional articles on stripping and then polishing.
what he says agrees with what I was taught while a mechanic for an AS dealer
back in the early 70s.

the alum skin has a "grain" to it.  just as wood has.  comes from its process of
manufacture.  what you want to do is to use your pads WITH the grain in long
strokes.  If you have ever hand sanded a table or stained it with a brush, the
same method is correct.

swirling comes from too coarse a grit, or too heavy a hand.  Also, it is
possible that the door is a softer piece of aluminium.

anyway, yes, either get some Clover's powdered abrasive in 400, 800, 1200 and
change your pads very frequently and wash them thorougly -- do a small section
at a time.

try to find Cooper's instructions - should be on the VAC somewhere.  ask over
there.
