[A/S] electric water heater

I have a         only water heater that is fairly
new...it also works great.  To add an electric element
in the drain hole it appears that I will have to take
off my gas line first to get the rod in the hole and
then hook the gas line back up.  I would assume then
that to drain the hot water tank in the winter that
one has to reverse the whole process once a year and
put it back together?  Has anyone done this and is it
worth the trouble?
