Jim,
I have the factory generator located right in front of the water heater
on the street side.
It is covered by a stainless steel door that says Onan on it.
It runs good for a 1972 model but only puts out 12v.
It has on the bottom of the 5 horse "lawn mower" engine what looks like a
oversize auto alternator.
It charges the battery pretty good as long as you get the idle speed set
right. If it is set too fast, it will fry any sensitive electronics you
have hooked up.
If one wanted to make their own setup I know Honda sells a propane
conversion kit for most of their engines from 5 to 25 horsepower. I
think Kohler does as well.
I have seen these kits on large welding machines that use these engines.
