Patti,
  The new pigtails have a large plastic knob that you can turn by hand 
to connect/disconnect from the cylinders. The older ones have a nut that 
requires a wrench and has left hand threads. If you can see the large, 
coarse thread on the valve when the pigtail is connected, you have the 
old-style connection.
