Tom, the rear axle ratio is an option that can be specified when the truck
is ordered. Sometimes the ratio is bundled with other drive train
characteristics. It can be changed as an after market item and there are
some who have done that if the vehicle didn't come with the optimum gearing.
You can probably find out about the rear axle ratio in the 1500 you are
considering by checking the sticker in the back post on the driver's door.
There are some codes there and there is probably a GMC web site that tells
you how to read the codes. It works that way on Ford products anyway.
Hopefully a GMC owner on the list can give you the specific instructions.
