I have a Honda EU2000.  

The Honda generators have a vented gas tank cap that has a valve to
close it off.  I smell no fumes with it closed.

I connect as you have suggested.  The cable to the adapter plugged in to
the generator.

It handles things just fine, except the air conditioner.  I would not
even try that.  Lights, 19" TV, computer/monitor and still almost at an
idle.  I keep forgetting to try the microwave, but it should not be a
problem.  With that load a full gas tank should last at least 12 hours
with the eco-idle feature turned on.

I have a pickup and this balding grey haired "mature" gentleman has no
problem lifting it in and out to carry to the rear of the trailer for
use.
