This may be a gross presumption, but have you really looked at the arms
that hold the awning out.?The brace arms that hold the roller from
coming back against the trailer are actually stowed on the main arm. You
have to grab the spring loaded catch and lift it off the hook, to get
them to swing free. To get the awning to stay extended, the hook has to
be set in the end of the roller (you'll find the appropriate place with
a bit of trial and error) and then the spring loaded button allowed to
pop into a suitable hole, to hold it in place.
Sorry but I struggled to "sort out the support system" for a while until
I took a careful look at one of my neighbour's at a rally.
