Actually, I think you are both right.  For many years
we did not have the proper symbol on type sets or
typewriters for the "micro" symbol which is the Greek
letter mu.  So we used the letter m, which really
stands for milli instead of micro, but since we did
not speak of capacitors in millifarads we used the m
to mean microfarads, even though it was the wrong
designation.  Now we can easily get the proper symbol,
mu, or just use the letter u for micro.

But you did not really want a history lesson from a
broken down, retired electronics tech and instructor
did you?
