My wife drives a 3 series BMW we've owned since '93.  It also uses a
computer to calculate service intervals rather than actually sample the oil.
We have ignored it.  The car gets oil and filter changes at regular mile and
time intervals.

A perhaps secondary reason for the BMW oil service monitor, and possibly
other manufacturers as well, is it forces owners to return to the dealership
for service.  A special tool is required to reset the oil change light in
the dash.  Fortunately the device can easily be duplicated and we also
ignore our dealer who provides poor service at inflated prices.  My wife
likes the car ...... and I like it because she is satisfied to retain it.
