Jim,
  I do the same; our Avion has real nice hubcaps that are stored at home 
so as to make it possible to check bearings/hubs. NAPA and other places 
sell this neat little temperature gun that is useful for checking tires, 
etc. Just point it and pull the trigger for an instant reading. Cost is 
$99.00 or thereabouts.
