A definitive answer to your tire ply question is difficult to provide.

Years ago, truck tires were rated as: 4 ply, conventional light duty; 6 ply,
heavy duty for a light truck; 8 ply, stronger; 10 ply, and so forth.

With the advent of radial tires, construction changed and manufacturers
began rating them by Load Range using letter designations.  The former 4 ply
is called Load Range B; former 6 ply = Load Range C; former 8 ply = Load
Range D, and so on.

If you are going to use your Tahoe primarily as a passenger and
transportation vehicle, the factory P type tires will be satisfactory if
properly inflated.  If you will tow extensively, I would change the tires as
soon as practical to LT tires in the same size.  P tires are passenger car
type tires, LT identifies light truck tires.  LT tires have stiffer
sidewalls, greater weight capacity, use higher air pressure, wear longer,
etc.
