Jack, just before Christmas, I drove from Melbourne, FL to Lexington, KY for 
the Holidays.  On the two tanks that were highway mileage, I got 19.6679 and 
19.3772 MPG.  This was all Interstate and driving just over 70 MPH.  The 
lowest mileage I have gotten is 16.6364 and it was mainly around town. I just 
turned 3000 miles on the truck and expect it to get better as it breaks in.  
My truck is an extended cab, 4X4, with an 8 ft. bed.

I don't know what to expect while towing, but someone recently said his 
mileage was in the mid-teens pulling a 31 ft. Airstream with his 
Duramax/Allison.  

From what I read on the 8.1L, I would have expected 15 MPG as a maximum 
mileage solo and 10 to 11 while towing.  

Don't cut yourself short on choosing a tow vehicle.  There is no substitute 
for cubic inches or torque.  I subscribe to what Tim Taylor said on Tool 
Time....."More Power".
