I use AOL, have for many years.  It's pretty much free for me because I have 
the AOL VISA card and get points toward my service.  I find for traveling 
that AOL is great because it has so many local access numbers and an 800# 
(10¢ a minute) for in the boonies.

For free you can go to local libraries and use their computer to access your 
mail on hotmail or one of the other freebies.
