I had a '72 Safari, with only the one battery in its compartment.  
One group 27 battery just barely fit into the compartment.  IIRC, the 
tightest dimension was the vertical one.  If yours is like mine was, 
stick with the group 27 battery.  Sears has a model of DieHard that's 
group 27, but is a bit shorter (height) than the older ones, and that 
was an easier fit.  Can't help with addition of other batteries; 
sorry.
