Re: [A/S] Grey water tanks

Airstream installed gray tanks for the first time in
1973. However, they only installed them in the
International models. That is the 27, 29, and 31 foot
models. Additionally they installed the gray tank in
the 73 Excella model. In 1974, all models had gray
tanks. The rear end separation, as claimed by many,
had nothing to do with the addition of the gray tanks.
The rear end problem was caused by not having the
running gear properly balanced, as so many owners were
not accustomed to doing in those days, and for that
matter, many still do not feel that running gear
balancing needs to be done, ( tire, wheel, hub and
drum as an assembly). If proper balancing is not done,
then many different failures occur, including
structural, plumbing, 12 volts, 120 volts, air
conditioner, and furnace failures, along with fatigue
cracks in the frame. The addition of the gray tanks,
merely enhanced the need for proper balancing contrary
to opinion, but proven with facts. Prior to gray
tanks, many owners that had 65 to 72 coaches also had
rear end separation. Many of them carried Television
sets and many other things in the bathroom. If that's
the case, then how can gray tanks be faulted? Doesn't
make sense, but just adds fuel to the fire of "lets
blame Airstream". Max
