The by-pass valve is on the right side of the water heater when you 
are facing it from the exterior. It is accessable from an exterior 
panel to the right of the heater panel (if you have one). Other wise 
it may be accessable by lifting a bed, etc. The valve has about a 4 
inch plastic coated handle. Mine is blue. Normal and by-pass
positions are clearly marked.
