Norma,
According to the Kelley Blue Book website (www.kbb.com), the private party 
value on that truck would be something over $5000.  You were right to 
question the book value he quoted you.  Either you are in line for a very 
good deal, or a very big headache (like if it needs a new engine).  Ask lots 
of questions.
