It sounds like you have corrosion that has/is taking place.  Has your 
trailer spent a lot of time on either coast near oceans or salt water or 
perhaps in an area of chemical factories?  Hopefully someone else will 
speak up but from what I have read in the past your best bet is to try 
sanding the areas, starting with 400 grit water proof paper and then 800 
grit and then 1200 grit.  You will not get rid of the pits but perhaps 
you can clean them up and seal them off to slow down the corrision.   
Might check web sits for aluminum corrison and filform corrosion.
