The more forgiving refers showed up in the late 70's. There is one way 
for sure to know if your refer is sensitive or not. That is by looking 
at the back of the refer on the right side. That would be
the insulated chimney above the gas burner. If the chimney is square the 
refer is more sensitive. If the chimney is round it reflect the redesign 
that made them more forgiving.

Not sure about leveling a tandem axle by blocking only one wheel. Sure 
would put a lot of weight on one wheel.
