[A/S] Newbie Needs Help! Clearcoat Question!

Hello to all.  I'm new here and really enjoy this site.  We'verecently 
acquired a '72 International Overlnder which I am trying toredo.  So 
far, I've ripped out the carpet, completely re-upholsteredthe sofas and 
beds, made new lined curtains throughout (what a job),scrubbed and 
scrubbed, repaired three water line breaks......Now, here's my 
question...I thought I would love to make it realshiny so I purchased a 
Cyclo Dual Head Orbital Polisher and theNuvite polish.  Went out and 
started testing an area and it justwould not shine up.  When I scratched 
the surface with my fingernailit would leave a white mark and I thought 
it was the clear coatcoming off.  After buffing an area and trying to 
scratch a mark whereI just buffed  it would not leave a white mark.  Is 
what I'm seeingnot actually the clearcoat but a wax build up?  I can't 
find anythingon the trailer where there is peeling of the clear coat.  
Should Ijust leave it alone and have that matt look?  Which is 
moredesirable, the mirror look or the pewter matt finish?  I just 
readthat some trailers that Airstream put out after a certain year 
(?)will not shine up.  Is mine of of them?  If the mirror look is 
moredesirable for these vintage campers how would I remove the 
clearcoat? I just want my new baby to be very, very attractive going 
down theroad and look it's best.  We've waited a long time to get her.
