George,
 Batteries loose a percentage of their charge every month while stored.
It's much more if the top has ANY dirt and moisture on it; I've seen one
of the old 6-volt batteries with exposed cell connectors and a dirty top
go dead overnight. Washing the top made the charge last for months.

Best thing would be to clean the batteries and connections, then make
sure of a complete charge. Let the battery(s) rest overnight, then
perform a load test to see if they're up to snuff.
