Rob,

Perhaps the "tube" is a resistor for the low speed? If they are DC 
fans you can make them reversible by using a DPDT switch with a 
center off position. Depending on the blade design, they might not 
work as well in the reverse mode. Make sure the motor isn't grounded 
through the case; you should have two wires coming from it. Here's 
how to do it.

The terminals on the bottom of the switch..

Connect one motor wire to 3 and the other to 4.
Connect the +12VDC to 1 and the ground to 2
Jumper 1 to 6; 2 to 5 (it's going to crossover)

If you want you can still keep your two speeds by doing this before 
your current switch.
