RE: [A/S] Exhaust brakes - A word of caution




As an 18-wheel over-the-road truck driver trainer, I was trained to NEVER 
use the engine or exhaust brakes in inclement weather or on level land.  
They are for hilly country during dry weather only.  Never use them in 
any wet weather--EVER!  The reason is simple.  Whenever the 
exhaust brake kicks in, there is a momentary pause before the trailer is 
effected.  Hence, the pulling vehicle slows, but the trailer 
maintains the same speed for a split second longer than the puller, an ideal 
situation for a JACKKNIFE to occur.
