Try working a sharp object, chisel or similar,  outer the edge of the 
mastic and prying it loose in small chunks.  I had good success this way. 
Put masking tape around area if you wish.  A scratch or two will be 
covered up when you reapply the mastic and who is going to see them 
anyway up on top?  It is probably Vulkem and you might be a bit surprized 
that on the interior the mastic may still have slight flexibiity, one of 
the reasons it has been such a successful material for airstreams.
