So is there a middle ground here.  Like buying a matched set of batts (that 
could be augmented later) combined with a combination of a good controller, 
one panel and my long puller umbilical?  These cables charge Airstream 
batts all the time while rolling down the road.

Many of us have run out of juice out in the boonies and just turned on our 
puller for temporary power.  You make it sound like there is no chance that 
my idling alternator will push any amps into the trailer batts ??
