You're right in thinking that.  Here in Arizona, our air conditioning
works much better when it is hot and dry.  Even swamp coolers work
better when the humidity is low.

The proliferation of urban lakes and swimming pools have increased the
average relative humidity to the point where it is very difficult to
cool a home down on a summer day during July-September.
