Lots of small vintage trailers are single axle and their owners love them.  
Personally, I like my tandem axle. I guess because the trailer will still 
travel with a flat tire, instead of going splat on the highway.

Of course if you get a flat you may not know it.... like I didn't and got 
$1,000 worth of damage in the wheel well after driving for 20 miles.....
