Not on my '72, Harvey.
On my '72 Safari, the sewer valve, as you say, allowed the contents 
of the blackwater tank to move to the external connection and into 
the sewer hose.  *Independently* of that valve, the gray water 
drained directly into the hose.  Naturally, one would not open the 
blackwater valve except to empty the blackwater tank; then it would 
be closed again.  But, the graywater *always* drained directly into 
the hose connection.  When camping with a sewer connection, we always 
left the hose connected to keep the graywater drained.
