Floor tiles prior to about 1980 had some asbestos (used as a binder). I have
installed literally thousands of square feet in my early working years. My
understanding is that the threat is minimal but best to play it safe and
wear appropriate dust masks etc. Avoid sanding the surface which will create
dust. Armstrong Industries who were the largest manufacturer of
vinyl/asbestos floor tile filed chapter 11 last week to minimize risk from
pending asbestos related law suits. Ironically these lawsuits are from
asbetos in ceiling tile produced by Armstrong-not flooring tile or linoleum
(some asbestos in paper backing) up to about 1980.
