Max and Michael,
In the 50's most linoleum and floor tiles were vinyl asbestos and for
your peace of mind 20 years down the road (when you might develop
asbestosis) treat the removal as if the dust were a threat to your
future health and wear proper clothing and goggles and breathing
protection.  Kentile which makes 9 inch tiles exactly in the patterns
they made in the 50's has been brought back into production in the past
couple of years without the asbestos.
