Once you get inside you may find that rivets are the way to go.
I bought theMcMaster Carr # 98300A150, Economy 360 Degree Swivel Head 
Rivet Tool. It is super handy. When you buy rivets, don't get steel 
mandrel or you will get rust.

I used a nibler like the one linked above.

Is that funky 'Y' a standard drain type and size?

If it is the same fitting as on my 66 it is a standard fitting
