Bob,
 I once read that a vehicle towing a trailer is something like 4 times more
likely to be involved in an accident than one that's running solo. There are
a number of things that you can do to tilt the odds in your favor:

1. Be sure that your rig is in top shape: brakes, bearings, tires, hitch
adjustments, etc. Weight and balance are important, and you need an adaquet,
well maintained tow vehicle.

2. Be aware of YOUR condition: don't drive if you're hung over, excessively
tired, distracted by a fight with your spouse, etc.

3. Avoid travel during peak commuter times: we're not usually on a tight
schedule like working folks, so can delay our depature for a couple of
hours.

4. Become a skilled driver: read all you can on the subject of towing and
practice emergency manuevers on a deserted road or large parking lot. You
could actually tow for years and many thousands of miles and still be
relatively unskilled when confronted with a real emergency if you've never
practiced.

5. Slow down: again, you shouldn't be in a hurry, and travelling too fast
makes things happen in a hurry.

6. Drive like you're on a motorcycle: most good bike drivers take the
attitude that "I'm a deer, and everyone else is the hunter". Such an
attitude raises your awareness of what's going on around you.
