[A/S] purchased our "Vintage Stream"!
Yes we finally took the plunge. After being bitten by the "aluminum bug"
about 14 months ago we have purchased a 1960 Overlander International
Serial # I260492D ( "I" for International "26" for length"0" for 1960
"492" for production # and "D" for double bed layout. Thanks to Scott
Scheuermann for the serial # analysis. By the way.. we haven't actually
seen the trailer yet. (in the flesh)
Since we live in Calgary, Alberta and the trailer is in Lancaster Ohio
(about 33 hrs driving each way) viewing it posed a challenge. I thought
I was going to be able to fly to a nearby airport on a recent business
trip and drive over for a look so I posted the "inspection tips for a
1960 Overlander" posting a couple of weeks ago. (thanks for all the
replies) Unfortunately the altering of my trip route was not possible.
One of the replies to my post was from Scott Scheuermann who owns a 1960
Overlander and lives about 3 hours away from the trailer. I asked Scott
if he might be interested in inspecting the trailer on my behalf if I
covered expenses etc. and he kindly agreed.
The seller's comment after the inspection was that Scott was extremely
thorough and spent 2 1/2 hours "going over it". This was reinforced by
the 7 1/2 page report Scott sent me. I will send the report to anyone
interested but thought it may be a bit lengthy for everyone on the list.
(I however have poured over it many times) I feel extremely fortunate to
have had a 12 year owner of the same model and year unit inspect the
trailer for me.
A few photos can be seen at http://pages.sprint.ca/_oneill/airstream.html
for those interested. They are the only
digital pics I have thus far and do not show a lot of detail. Areas of
higher shine are where the 2nd owner started to hand polish it. He
bought it earlier this year from the original owners but family
circumstances have caused him to sell it. The trailer was owned by the
original owners in Oklahoma and apparently was on a couple of Mexican
caravans in the 60's.
We are storing the trailer in Ohio until spring of 2001. Then I plan on
a solo "limited stop" drive to Ohio to move the trailer to a RV facility
(perhaps Airstream factory) to have all safety and structural components
checked and repaired as required. About this time my wife (Barb) and
girls (Kelly-8 and Keara-5) will fly out to meet me for the adventure of
camping our way home.(over about 2 weeks)
The exterior is in very good original condition with some oxidizing. The
interior is also quite original and complete with a solid floor. I will
post more pics as I get them scanned.
Thank-you to everyone on the list for their help, especially Hunter for
making the list possible, Tom Patterson for his insights and fabulous
web site and Scott Scheuermann for a great inspection!
