Not quite sure which previous post you got your information from, but it is not
quite accurate. As outlined in the service manuals of the 70's the axle can be
realigned by bending with a dual action hydraulic ram while remaining bolted to
the frame. The bender is applied inboard of the frame near the wheel in
question. The alignment specs are quite close with toe in at 1/16"  with a
1/16" plus/minus. Taking a fully loaded trailer over a curb is often enough to
misalign an axle. I would be glad to send you some scans of the pages if it
will help your understanding of the process.
