We used to "cool-down" fire engine so that the turbo could cool off (e
called it spinning down), it stopped running at idle and was bathed in
cooler oil (the bearings).  We no longer do that (do not really know why,
other than the turbo design has changed).  Cooling it down may just be a
carry over.  We have all diesel ambulances that are basically the same
engines you guys are using and I have never heard of cooling them down.

Something to consider, we shut a diesel off ASAP, particularly in the
apparatus bays because the diesel fumes are known to have free radicals that
are cancer causing, and readily infiltrate the fire house.  It is now an
OHSA reg that all our vehicles have vapor control systems on them to keep as
much fumes out of the stations as possible.  The reason I mention that is, I
am not sure I would want to stand around and let my diesel idle and cool
off.  I personally try to stay away from a diesel when it is sitting around
idling (not a diesel slam).
